A Little About This Program

Schools Prevention Program KARE’s largest outreach prevention program goes into all nine public elementary schools in Haywood County where a wonderful, seasoned team of trained volunteers work with school counselors to present a fifty-minute, interactive session each school year in every classroom educating children about safety issues and how to avoid child abuse.

Each age-level appropriate program has special materials that are shared by the trained K.A.R.E. volunteer for that particular grade. Parents are sent materials home with their student informing them of what program was shared that day and encouraging them in the often-challenging tasks that good parenting brings.

Kindergarten: The video “Two Kinds of Touch”, set at the zoo and with puppet actors, is shown and the volunteers dialogue with the children in the class to be sure they understand what those two kinds of touch are.

First: This program is called “Funny Tummy Feelings” and the volunteers use puppets and visual aids to explore this subject and engage the children in a crucial learning process.

Second: “What TaDoo” is the video shown to second graders and it teaches children how to protect themselves from strangers with four basic rules: Say No, Get Away, Tell Someone and Sometimes, Yell.

Third: The video “Better Safe Than Sorry” shows students, in a sensitive and problem-solving way, how to deal with various situations that might lead to molestation from people known to them. Four principal themes are reinforced throughout the film: Say No, Get Away, Tell Someone and Be Believed.

Fourth: A young man is awakened one night in the sci-fi themed video “The Diary” by his future son who has come down in a space ship to warn his father about the consequences of his actions to their relationship. This opens the door for the volunteer and counselor to explore physical child abuse in the family with the fourth grade students.

Fifth: The final class presentation centers around the video “Yes, You Can Say No” and it is the story of David and how he learns assertiveness skills to deal with and stop being sexually exploited by a once-trusted adult. Students share David’s growing sense of confidence which also helps him at home and at school.
